EILEEN HICKEY

EILEEN was Officer Commanding the Republican Women P.O.W's in Armagh Gaol from 1973 to 1977.

She firmly believed that it was important to educate our youth in order to give them an understanding of the history of the republican struggle for Irish freedom.

On her release in July 1977, she returned to republican activism and was active for the remainder of her life. After gaining a university honours degree in the years following her release from Armagh Gaol, Eileen dedicated herself to the task of tutoring young people through the courses being delivered at the Springhill Community House Project and Conway Mill Education Centre

Sadly, Eileen lost her battle with cancer on 2nd. February 2006. Her project to provide a museum of Irish Republican History was still unfinished.

As a tribute to her, the committee which she had set up, determined to see her project completed
